Half Day Estancia Experience

Half day Estancia Experience

A unique estancia experience in one of the most scenic places in the region

Visit a Patagonian livestock farm with a long, interesting history, and one of the best views of the iconic Torres del Paine national park. Estancia Laguna Amarga was part of the biggest farming company in Patagonia, Sociedad Explotadora of Tierra del Fuego, but in 1973 it was bought by a local family, immigrants from Croatia, and for years it was a private livestock farm with more than 5,500 sheep. Today, the estancia combines old traditions with today’s knowledge about environment friendly livestock management, and co-existence with local wildlife, and the family has been working various years with the conservation of puma.

It is a private tour, and we offer a variety of activities:

We meet you at the Laguna Amarga viewpoint where we will bring you to different sites at the property:

First we will visit the original estancia, where you will learn about the history, and visit our old shearing shed and our vegetable garden. We are working towards being self-sufficient as possible, and we will love to show you how we grow our vegetable, do our compost and garbage sorting. Then we take you through our area, Pumaland, where some old cave paintings were found. This area has a lot of wildlife to see, so bring camera or binoculars! Returning to the estancia, we will pass by the Sarmiento Lake, the monument of the Southern Sky pioneer, Gunther Pluschow, and you will learn about the area and our approach to holistic livestock management and conservation. Before ending the tour, we will make a stop at an old post, where we will enjoy a traditional picnic, accompanied by a good Chilean wine.

This tour is a perfect way to get to know local culture and fauna, visit beautiful and historic sites and enjoy a day with friends and family learning about life at the end of the world, Patagonia.

This tour is also perfect for people who are visiting and/or staying in the national park, Torres del Paine, driving in their own car, and have a half day to do a cultural experience before entering the park, or when leaving the park, since we are located just at the border of the Amarga entrance of the national park.
